What wood are indoor basketball courts made from?

Indoor basketball courts are commonly made with hardwood playing surfaces, especially maple. Beech and ash are also used in documented sports-floor systems. The species affects appearance, grain, hardness, wear behavior, and maintenance considerations, but it does not determine court performance by itself.

A basketball floor is a complete construction. Beneath the hardwood may be resilient components, sleepers, panels, or another engineered subfloor that contributes to shock absorption, vertical deformation, ball rebound, stability, and load behavior. Finish, installation quality, substrate condition, and indoor climate also influence the completed court.

When selecting a floor, compare current test data for the entire proposed system before choosing the wood species. Then consider surface durability, visual grade, repair and refinishing options, maintenance, sourcing documentation, and compatibility with the venue's climate and use. Different hardwood species can be used in systems that meet the same performance requirements, while two courts made from the same species may behave differently because their underlying constructions are not the same.
