What should you plan before building an indoor hardwood basketball court?
Plan the building and the floor system together. Start with the intended level of basketball, other activities, court dimensions, run-off zones, and unobstructed clear height. These decisions affect the building envelope, equipment, lighting, and usable floor area.
Next, assess the slab or subfloor for flatness, moisture, structural suitability, and available build-up height. Decide whether the court will be fixed or portable, then define the required playing performance, including impact response, deformation, ball rebound, and surface friction. Choose only a complete system documented for the intended use.
The design should also coordinate hoops, bleachers, stages, game lines, graphics, floor protection, access routes, and installation logistics. Consider cleaning, recoating, repairs, and future event loads before construction begins.
A hardwood basketball court is not simply boards over concrete. Early coordination among the architect, sports floor supplier, installer, structural team, and facility operator reduces redesign and helps ensure that the finished court performs as specified.
