What is the difference between EN 14904 A3 and A4 sports floors?

EN 14904 A3 and A4 are classifications for area-elastic sports floors, not simple quality grades. Both describe systems that spread a load over a wider floor area, but the categories have different performance limits for shock absorption and vertical deformation.

In practical terms, an A4 system is classified within a range that calls for greater minimum shock absorption and permits more vertical movement than an A3 system. That does not make A4 automatically better. More movement can affect how the floor feels and behaves under athletes, wheel loads, retractable seating, stages, and other equipment. The right category depends on the venue's sports program, users, construction constraints, and operating demands.

Always verify the current thresholds and the exact tested build-up in authoritative EN 14904 documentation and the supplier's current test reports. Do not infer A3 or A4 from the hardwood thickness, resilient pads, or system name alone. Compare the complete system, including ball response, friction, loads, installation conditions, and required sport-specific approvals.
