What is the difference between a basketball court floor and a gym floor?

A basketball court floor is the playing surface and underlying system specified for basketball. A gym floor is a broader term that can describe flooring in a multipurpose athletic space used for basketball, volleyball, badminton, fitness, assemblies, and community events. The terms often overlap, but they are not always interchangeable.

A basketball specification emphasizes predictable ball rebound, traction, impact response, court markings, and the playing characteristics required for its level of competition. A multipurpose gym floor must balance those needs with other sports, retractable bleachers, rolling equipment, stages, floor protection, and frequent changes of use. The same hardwood system may serve both purposes when its documented performance and load capacity match the program.

When planning a project, define the activities first rather than relying on the label “gym floor.” Compare complete tested systems, game-line requirements, equipment loads, maintenance, and event use. This determines whether a basketball-focused court or a broader multipurpose sports floor specification is appropriate.
