What does EN 14904 actually tell you about a sports floor?
EN 14904 provides a common European framework for evaluating indoor sports-floor performance. It helps buyers and specifiers compare tested systems using defined safety and performance characteristics rather than relying on material names or marketing descriptions.
Depending on the floor category and intended use, the standard addresses characteristics such as shock absorption, vertical deformation, ball rebound, friction, rolling-load behavior, impact resistance, and other relevant properties. The classification describes how the complete tested construction performed under specified laboratory methods. It does not mean that every compliant floor feels identical or suits every sport, building, or operational need.
Use the supplier's current test reports and declarations for the exact system being specified, including its construction and installation conditions. Then compare those results with the sports, athlete profile, equipment loads, maintenance plan, and governing-body requirements for the venue. EN 14904 is an important baseline for specification, but it is not a substitute for project-specific design or sport-specific approval.
