Is solid hardwood better than engineered wood for a sports floor?

Neither construction is universally better. Solid and engineered hardwood sports floors can have different advantages, and the right choice depends on the complete system, intended sports, site conditions, maintenance strategy, and required performance documentation.

Solid hardwood may offer particular repair and refinishing possibilities depending on board design and remaining material. Engineered construction may provide other dimensional or installation characteristics. However, these general differences do not prove shock absorption, ball rebound, deformation, stability, or load capacity. Those qualities must be tested and documented for the complete floor build-up.

Compare systems on performance, substrate and moisture requirements, build-up height, installation method, rolling loads, maintenance, repairability, expected refurbishment, and total operating needs. Product-specific data should support any claim about service life or the number of possible refinishing treatments. For a sports venue, choose the system that meets the relevant standard and project conditions rather than treating “solid” or “engineered” as a standalone quality grade.
