How much does it cost to recoat a hardwood gym floor?

Recoating cost varies with court size, surface condition, preparation, location, labor, game lines, and the selected finish. A contractor should inspect the floor before giving a dependable price, because a recoat is suitable only when the existing coating is sound and compatible.

The scope may include deep cleaning, abrasion or other specified preparation, minor repairs, line or graphic work, finish application, ventilation, curing, and temporary closure of the gym. Contamination, poor adhesion, exposed wood, deep scratches, moisture damage, or incompatible past products can turn a planned recoat into a larger refinishing project.

When comparing quotes, confirm the measured area, preparation method, coating system, number of coats, treatment of markings, curing time, and exclusions. Recoating is different from refinishing: it renews an existing finish without fully sanding the floor back to bare wood. It can be a cost-effective maintenance step when undertaken at the right time, but it should not be used to conceal structural or deeper surface damage.
