Does the wood species change how a basketball court performs?
Wood species can influence surface hardness, appearance, wear patterns, and dimensional behavior, but it does not determine basketball performance on its own. The complete sports floor system is responsible for shock absorption, deformation, ball rebound, stability, and other documented characteristics.
A harder species may respond differently to dents and surface wear than a softer one, while grain, color variation, and finishing affect the court’s visual character. Dimensional response must also be considered with climate, board construction, installation, and maintenance. These properties should be verified in current product data rather than inferred from the species name alone.
When choosing a court, compare the tested floor system first, then evaluate species-specific durability, appearance, repair, refinishing, sourcing, and maintenance for the venue. The same species can perform differently in different constructions, and different species can be used in systems that meet the same performance requirements. Select on documented system results and operational needs, not a blanket claim that one wood always plays better.
