Can you put a hardwood sports floor directly on concrete?

A hardwood sports floor should not be treated as ordinary boards placed directly on a concrete slab. Some approved systems may use a bonded or low-build construction, while others require a resilient subfloor or another engineered layer to deliver the specified sports performance.

Before installation, the slab must meet the selected system’s requirements for moisture, flatness, strength, cleanliness, and curing. The floor build-up may also need to provide controlled shock absorption, deformation, ball response, moisture protection, and load distribution. These characteristics belong to the complete system, not to the hardwood surface alone.

Do not adapt a residential hardwood-on-concrete method to a sports venue without system documentation. First define the intended sports, performance standard, available build-up height, and operational loads. Then select a documented hardwood sports floor system and follow its current installation instructions. Moisture testing, slab preparation, adhesives, intermediate layers, and tolerances should be verified by the manufacturer and qualified installer for the specific project.
