Can you play volleyball on a basketball court?

Yes, a hardwood basketball court can often be used for volleyball if the floor meets the required sports performance and the venue has the correct volleyball layout and equipment. Sharing the surface does not mean the two court setups are identical.

Volleyball needs its own court dimensions, boundary lines, clear zones, net height, and properly positioned post sockets or another approved support system. Basketball hoops, anchors, and surrounding equipment must not obstruct safe volleyball play. The floor should also provide documented shock absorption, deformation, friction, stability, and consistent response appropriate to the venue's competition level.

Use separate, clearly distinguishable line colors and confirm the current rules of the relevant governing body. Net posts and protective padding must be compatible with the building and floor construction. A dedicated volleyball setup may be preferable where competition requirements, frequent use, spectator arrangements, or limited run-off space make conversion impractical. The same hardwood surface can support both sports, but each activity still needs a correctly planned court configuration.
